John J. Grimes, is a matrimonial lawyer, collaborative divorce attorney and divorce mediator. He is a founding partner of the law firm of Grimes & Zimet, a boutique law firm concentrating primarily on family and matrimonial matters, with offices in Chappaqua and New York City. A former member of the New York City Police Department, where he served as a Police Officer, Detective and Sergeant, John resigned from the Department to enter Harvard Law School. Trained initially as a commercial litigator at a major New York City law firm, John represented a number of major corporations, celebrities and politicians, eventually moving on to a position as an in-house litigator at a major international airline based in New York City. After leaving the corporate world, John decided to return to his roots in law enforcement, accepting a position in the New York City Police Department as an Assistant Commissioner overseeing the civil aspects of world’s largest law enforcement agency. His appointment also involved his serving as the General Counsel for the Civilian Complaint Review Board. Since the formation of his firm in 1989, John’s practice in the area of matrimonial and family law opened his eyes to the devastating emotional effects and financial toll of litigation on spouses and their children, leading him to explore non-adversarial options to litigation. This inquiry led John to the alternate dispute options of mediation and collaborative divorce.
